The Ever Classic Conversation:-

Swami Vivekanand:- I can’t find free time. Life has become hectic. Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Activity gets you busy. But productivity gets you free. Swami Vivekanand:- Why has life become complicated now? Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Stop analyzing life.. It makes it complicated. Just live it. Swami Vivekanand:- Why are we then constantly unhappy? Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Worrying has become your habit. That’s why you are not happy. Swami Vivekanand:- Why do good people always suffer? Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Diamond cannot be polished without friction. Gold cannot be purified without fire. Good people go through trials, but don’t suffer. With that experience their life becomes better, not bitter. Swami Vivekanand:- You mean to say such experience is useful? Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Yes. In every term, Experience is a hard teacher. She gives the test first and the lessons afterwards. Swami Vivekanand:- Because of so many problems, we don’t know where we are heading… ...

Economics PhDs In India becoming a scarce commodity

I have raised numerous concerns over declining research standards in India ( See  Indian academia salaries- Too low or too high?, A request to India’s Ivy Leagues- show us some research, Deciphering the B-school ranking in India etc) . This recent Business Standard article further confirms my views and extends the scope of discussion from B-Schools to Economics departments/ Schools. D K Srivastava, director of Madras School of Economics (MSE), is disappointed when he sees 50 Master’s students graduate every year with lucrative job offers. MSE admits two or three students every year for its doctoral programme, a third of what it can accommodate. Aggregate data on the number of students completing their PhD in Economics are not available. Even the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), a premier institute set up by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for research in development issues, found it difficult to attract students for its PhD programme a couple of years...

Mankiw’s advice to students going to college

Greg Mankiw gives some valuable advice to students going to college. He AS a Harvard professor who teaches introductory economics, I have the delightful assignment of greeting about 700 first-year students every fall. And this year, I am sending the first of my own children off to college. Which raises these questions: What should they be learning? And what kind of foundation is needed to understand and be prepared for the modern economy? He points to 4 things to learn: Learn some economics Learn some finance Learn some psychology Ignore advice as you see fit (follow your own path)

Articles Every Aspiring Economist Should Read

Nothing stirs up controversy in the digital age quite like a list. But lists, especially ones that provide an easily accessible way to learn essential information, have their purposes. Below, I offer 12 articles that I think every aspiring economist should read. Before we get to the list, let me say a few things about how I created it. First, my imagined audience is an undergraduate who intends to enter a PhD program in economics, although the list could be interesting and useful for other people with other goals. Second, this list most certainly reflects my own interests and training. It is a list very much in what Peter Boettke would call the “mainline” of economic thinking, which sees markets as effective coordinating processes and is skeptical of what government can do to improve on them. Third, this list is most emphatically not “the” 12 articles people should read. I can think of another dozen important reads that I left off this list. So I am certainly not making a definitive ...
